Privacy and campaign measurement

Published by Adrian Dane. Updated 21 October 2026.

We use anonymous daily totals to understand how readers discover The Stat Man. Campaign banners count an impression after at least half of a banner is visible for one continuous second. We also count promotion clicks, visits to chapter one and departures to Amazon, grouped by creative, placement, sport and book edition.

The counters are operated by Adrian Dane through whatchan.co.uk. Requests necessarily reach our hosting providers, which may process connection information in their ordinary security and access logs. The campaign counter itself stores daily aggregate counts, not IP addresses, names, email addresses, full page addresses or browser identifiers. It sets no cookies and uses no browser storage or fingerprinting. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control suppress campaign measurement. Links work if measurement is blocked.

Campaign labels in links can continue between the book site and The Sports Guru. They describe a promotion, not a person. Aggregate counters are retained for up to 13 months; individual journeys cannot be reconstructed from these totals.

Amazon receives its own connection information when you follow a purchase link and applies its own privacy policy. An outbound click is not a purchase. If eligible Amazon Attribution tags are enabled, Amazon reports attributed purchases separately under its own measurement rules. These tags are currently inactive.
